Biochar & Soil Carbon

Biochar and soil carbon.

Biochar is stable carbon added to soil to improve structure, nutrient retention and long-term performance — one of the tools Kinetra uses alongside composting and cover cropping to rebuild degraded land.

What biochar does for soil

Biochar is a highly porous, stable form of carbon produced by heating organic material with limited oxygen. Once worked into soil, it improves structure and water-holding capacity, helps retain nutrients that would otherwise leach away, and persists in soil far longer than untreated organic matter.

Kinetra's biochar programme

Kinetra produced its first biochar from industrial hemp, exhibited at the Zimbabwe Agricultural Show. To date, our programme has produced more than 50 tonnes of biochar, used to improve soil structure and long-term performance across our regenerative field trials.

Biochar, soil organic carbon and natural capital

Because biochar is a stable carbon store, it contributes to measurable increases in soil organic carbon over time. Where those increases can be measured and verified, they can open carbon-market and natural-capital opportunities — a result of well-designed regenerative systems, not the starting point of our work.
